Other organisations’ plaques – Bridges

  • Framwellgate Bridge – original bridge built by Bishop Flambard (1099-1128). Present bridge rebuilt by Bishop Langley in the early 15th century, widened in the early 19th century
  • Framwellgate Panthead – ancient wellhead / pant to access a spring given to the inhabitants of the City by Thomas Billingham in 1450. Currently located at the corner of Framwelgate Peth / Diamond Terrace
    • CITY OF DURHAM. This superstructure stood on the original site of The Ancient Fram Well Head at a spot approximately 165 yards to the North North-East now marked by a cairn. The inscription below was found on a tablet within the superstructure upon its removal to the present site in 1959.
    • This spring was given for the use on inhabitants of the City of Durham for ever by Thomas Billingham, Esq., by deed dated the 14th March, 1450 with leave to convey the water by pipes to the pant in the Market Place which grant was confirmed by a decree of the Court of Chancery in Durham on the 30th March, 1633. The reservoir having become dilapidated was rebuilt on the site and in the style of the original erection by public subscription in the year 1847.

  • Milburngate Bridge – opened 1967
  • Prebends Bridge – built by George Nicholson for the Dean and Chapter 1772-1778. Restored 1955-1956
  • Prebends Bridge – quote from a poem ‘Harold the Dauntless’ by Sir Walter Scott
  • Kingsgate Footbridge – opened November 1963
    • Civic Trust Award 1965. Kingsgate Bridge 1963. Commissioned by the University of Durham. Designed by Ove Arup
    • Concrete Society. Mature Concrete Structures Award 1993
  • Elvet Bridge – built by Bishop Puiset (1153 – 1195) as the second river crossing; widened upstream in 1805
  • New Elvet Bridge – built in 1975; refurbished 2020-2021
  • Highgate Bridge – footpath from St Godric’s Church to the Highgate development, and leading to the railway station. Built in 2004. Plaques on railings and in pavement
  • Baths Bridge – City of Durham. This bridge was opened by Councillor J.O. Luke Chairman of Works Committee of the City Council 16th June 1962. L. Ellis City Engineer. L.G. Mouckel & Partners Consulting Engineers. Purdie Lumsden & Co Ltd Civil Engineering Contractors. Note: There used to be a triangular Civic Trust Award plaque (with date 1962) to the right of the main plaque.
