Chapel Passage, entrance to a ‘discrete’ Catholic chapel before Catholic Emancipation which was replaced by St Cuthbert’s Church in 1827 – 33 Old Elvet This plaque is missing as the older building was replaced by a modern building for student accommodation (previously the University Catholic Chaplaincy which is now located in St Cuthbert’s Catholic Church, Old Elvet).

NEPTUNE. This statue was given to the City in 1729 by George Bowes M.P. of Gibside and Streatlam as a symbol of the scheme to link Durham to the sea by improved navigation of the River Wear. It stood on top of the Market Place wellheads until 1923, when it was moved to Wharton Park. It was restored in 1986 following an appeal initiated by the City of Durham Trust.

THIS COMPOSITE RESIN BUST IS A REPLICA OF AN ORIGINAL PORTRÁIT HEAD BY DIANA BRANDENBURGER (1987)
56 CLAYPATH. JAMES FINLAY WEIR JOHNSTON. Applied Scientist and Scholar lived here 1826-55.
From his bequest was founded the Durham Johnston School.
